A man has been arrested after a police officer was assaulted while trying to detain a suspect in Sutton-in-Ashfield.

Officers were called to an address in Chaucer Crescent shortly after 12.35pm yesterday (October 3) after reports of a street fight.

On arrival they found a man with a head wound and led him towards a police car. The man then attempted to flee the scene but was pursued over a garden fence and detained after a struggle in which a police officer was punched in the face.

A 28-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assault and assaulting an emergency worker and later released under investigation.

Inspector Mark Dickson, district commander for the Ashfield district, said: "[Police officers] may wear a uniform and have the power to arrest people, but ultimately they are just normal people who want to do a job to the best of their ability and return home safely to their families.”
