Thanks to a massive solar flare, the Aurora Borealis could be seen above Nottinghamshire tonight (Tuesday 17th March).

The Met Office has predicted that the spectacular phenomenon could be seen across large parts of the UK, as far south as the Midlands.

The aurora borealis is caused by the interaction of the solar wind - a stream of charged particles escaping the Sun - and Earth’s magnetic field and atmosphere.
