Larentiu-Lucian Nistor was funding his gambling habit with child benefit when his partner left him to live with her mother in September last year, said prosecutor Annelli Pritchard.
But when they decided to give the relationship another go, she said things were still difficult between February and June.

They began arguing at their place of work on Boughton Industrial Estate, on June 5.
"She told him that even though they worked hard she would wind up penniless as he would gamble all their money away," said Ms Pritchard.
When she threatened to call the police, Nistor said: "What can the police do to me?"

In a statement, his wife said she couldn’t eat, even though she feels hungry, and “continuously worries about what will happen.”
David Ellis, mitigating, said: "It's clear that living and working together has placed something of a strain on these two people.
"Since the incident he has moved from the home address and has left the employment he shared with his estranged wife. He has obtained alternative employment with Sports Direct.

He has no previous convictions, Mr Ellis said, adding that Nistor now wishes to rekindle the relationship if his wife is willing.
Nistor, 32, of Westfield Lane, Mansfield, admitted assault by beating, via a Romanian interpreter, when he appeared at Nottingham Magistrates Court, on Wednesday.
He received a 12 month community order with 15 rehabilitation days. No compensation was awarded. He was fined £300, and ordered to pay £85 costs and a £95 surcharge. A 12-month restraining order was also imposed.
