Will it snow today? Forecasters warn of ‘bitterly cold’ day in the UK

The temperature across the UK today is expected to drop up to 11C lower following a sunny Easter weekend.

The Met Office states that figures could drop to as low as -7C in parts of Scotland while areas of northern England could also experience sub-zero figures.

‘Cold front moving southward’

Met Office forecaster Simon Partridge said: “There’ll be a drop of 11 degrees between one day and the next, so you will definitely notice it!”

He explained that the oncoming cold weather is due to a change of wind direction which will bring a change in the atmosphere.

Partridge said: “The air we had on Sunday came in from the south, so it’s pretty mild having come off the continent.

“Overnight we’ll see a cold front moving southward across the country, it’s already across northern Scotland, and it’ll push its way southward overnight.

“That will introduce much, much colder air across the whole country.”

Chief Meteorologist at the Met Office, Dan Suri, also added: “The Met Office has been signalling a dramatic change in weather type for several days, with very cold air moving from the Arctic through Sunday night, bringing snow showers and freezing overnight temperatures and all accompanied by strong northerly wings accentuating the cold.

“Although snow showers will predominantly affect the north and north west, they could occur almost anywhere in the UK early this week, at least temporarily.”

Yellow weather warnings

The Met Office has issued a number of yellow weather warnings across Scotland for wind and snow.

These warnings, which cover the more northern parts of Scotland, including Aberdeen and Inverness, will last until Tuesday (6 April) morning at 10am.

The Met Office says that “frequent heavy snow showers will affect northern Scotland on Sunday night and Monday and may lead to some travel disruption”.

The weather forecaster says to be prepared for some roads and railways to be affected, with longer journey times by road, bus and train services.
